WLANs have evolved from a nice-to-have convenience to an essential mobility technology. Many users are pushing IT departments to deploy a pervasive mobile work environment, and they expect that WLANs will have fast, predictable behavior, just like a wired LAN. The fundamental enterprise challenge to deploying a robust, reliable WLAN is controlling the underlying radio signals. Unfortunately, radio signals are difficult to control, easy to disturb, and impossible to see. WLAN vendors have developed a variety of solutions, broadly called radio management (RM), to deal with this challenge.
