An effective Web experience has proven elusive in the past because of the limited reach of desktop applications and fairly unsophisticated user interface capabilities of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). However, that is changing quickly with the relatively recent popularity of rich Internet application (RIA) technologies, such as Asynchronous JavaScript + XML (Ajax), Flash Player, and Java. Organizations can enhance a user’s experience with web applications by judiciously choosing a RIA technology, but must understand the capabilities and limitations of each RIA solution considered.
